The United Professional Horsemen’s Association Jesus Gonzales Gomez Caretaker Hall of Fame award is given to an individual who has shown a longstanding commitment to providing the highest level of care for show horses. During the November 14, 2024, Thursday evening performance of the UPHA American Royal National Championship, the UPHA was proud to honor Luis DeLoya as the 2024 inductee.
Luis is more than just a caretaker; he is an artist in his field, transforming the care of horses into a true craft. With decades of experience and a heart full of passion, Luis has consistently demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to his horses and the people behind them. His journey began at Cricket Hill in the early 1990s, and for the past 18 years, he has been a cornerstone at Cater Stables.
What sets Luis apart is his extraordinary ability to bond with each horse he cares for. Whether it's a feisty young mare just starting out or a seasoned show horse, Luis's meticulous attention to detail and his intuitive understanding of each horse's needs are truly remarkable. His patience and dedication have transformed countless horses into champions, all while fostering a deep sense of trust and understanding with their owners.
Kristen Cater, co-owner of Cater Stables, eloquently remarked, "Luis has been essential at Cater Stables since the very beginning. He has been with us through the growth of our business and has been a huge asset to both David and me. Our horses have blossomed under his care for nearly two decades. We could never truly show our appreciation for him, but his loyalty and dedication to our team will always be appreciated."
Over the years, Luis has cared for an incredible group of horses and ponies, including RWGC Hallelujah Moment, RWC CH Like an Admiral, WCC Arrowhead’s The Last Samurai, WCC CH Soquili’s Curious George, WCC CH-EQ Chianti’s Prayer, WCC CH Spread The Word, WCC CH Graceful Surprise, WCC CH Who, WC CH Callaway’s Born With Style, WC CH Stocco, WC CH Nuttin’ Innocent, WC Heartland American Idol, WC I’m A Mystery, WC Bluebonnet’s Hip Hop, WC One Rare Moment, RWCC With Rare Grace, WC Slamcracker, WC SSLLC Ironman, and WC Lailani’s Fireball.
Luis's care is not limited to just the horses; he genuinely cares for the people around them. He is the first to offer a high five for a job well done and the first to provide honest feedback when improvement is needed. His personable, kind, and engaging nature makes him an integral part of the Cater Stables family.
Dr. Amanda Murchison, a long-time client and friend, echoes this sentiment: "Luis has been a staple in my life and in the lives of my horses since the 90s. His talent with a horse is absolutely unparalleled: he instinctively knows what each individual needs and when exactly they need it."
Luis's work goes beyond mere duty; it is a labor of love, a way of life. He is the first to arrive at the barn each morning and the last to leave, ensuring that every horse under his care receives the attention and treatment it deserves. His skillful and careful hand not only nurtures the horses but also inspires everyone around him to strive for excellence. His keen eye for detail allows him to recognize signs of concern, initiating immediate treatment and keeping every horse in optimal health.
Kate Codeanne, another grateful client, sums it up perfectly: "We have been so lucky to have Luis care for our horses at Cater Stables. He is not only the very best at his job, with unmatched attention to detail, but he also takes a vested interest in his horses, their happiness, and their success."
Luis DeLoya's unwavering dedication, his genuine kindness, and his infectious enthusiasm have made him a leader in his field. He is a role model for caretakers everywhere, embodying the qualities of hard work, loyalty, and commitment. Congratulations once again on this well-deserved honor. Let us all learn from your example and continue to strive for excellence in our own endeavors.
